Ted table discussion with Jaclyn Monday 8:05

Discussion of scale of buildings and pedestrian retail to the outside.

Maybe redo the east west sidewalk down the block, to tie it all in.

Perhaps put a canopy down the face of the other buildings. You will never be able to build it, but that’s not the purpose of this studio.

Pinup discussion with Jacklyn Tuesday morning

This scheme seems more about turning the corner,

The angles hint at what Ted thinks you want. “They aren’t there.”

The trees are about creating a boulevard, not an edge.

Maybe your canopy should be part of the sidewalk.

Your scheme is to respectful to the other buildings.

Jaclyn noted that she turned the canopy around the corner to cover the subway because she wanted the subway traffic to come out and feel they were in the Apple store when they come out.

Mid-Week Review
Wednesday 08.22.2007 - 6:45 PM

Karen:
• Why are you making this wall?
• First understanding of your model as beam of light line through wall panels
• Framed apature well
• Too scripted to see view on path down darthmouth st
• Mark somewhere on Dartmouth make sign or plaque stating best view to your project
• Saw statement; How focus?
• More narrow and double plaza site is good
• Frame enclosure to square
• Move under canopy and along 2nd wall working?
• Similar wall in other applications actually separates you from building or space
• Is the wall forcing others to the opposite side of the street to avoid?
• Why opaque? Achieve with other material?
• Street re-engineered and moved the crossing paths
• No walls same effect?
o Light
o Trees
o Wall = excluding
o Maybe fence?
o Not continuous?
• People sophisticated about reading barriers like lines on the floor
• An economy of means across building
• Marketing? Apple NOT about and experience or journey
• Capture Apple membrane of wall
• Interaction with people at street. How can this be achieved.
• Wall of exchange, social element
Rick:
• Is the wall at the back acting like the wall in the front?
Karen:
• Push harder!
Ted:
• Layers are permeable
Karen:
• Materials, de-materializing the 4th wall with project or display idea
• What to do with East and West walls?
• Tectonic moments – double meaning of street and Copley Square
• Interesting logic… your thesis
• Double Copley Square… Creating 4th wall…
• Find and Review: Tokyo Red Light Square Dance
• Come up with 15 different materials to construct panels out of
• Canopy framing too heavy
• Tilt all beams down or up?
• Find and Review: Memorial to Murdered Jews – Peter Eisenman
o Become benches, then closer to park, now in ground like a grave marker
• What happens to edge
• When switching to new wall, scale is lost
• Find and Review: Nam June Paik
o Aquarium out of 30 TV’s
o Accumulation of one simple thing and Expand
• Take 3 of the extended wall elements and make benches
• Rest mini plazas
• Drawings reflect model
