9-6-07 Progress

In answer to Ted's question regarding abandoning the forms up the sidewalk: No I haven't abandoned that. I know the last models didn't really show it and that's because of the the scale I was working at and I was really trying to concentrate on the corner. After much deliberating I believe I have come up with the element that will be incorporated throughout the exterior and interior. The framed boxes which made up the street wall on my first model from 9-3 will be my element. I will utilize the boxes to complete the path up the sidewalk and they will continue on into the inside.

I am including some sketches to demonstrate the idea for them on the interior spaces.


This sketch demonstrates the stair enclosure. You feel like you are inhabiting the "wall"



This sketch shows the same idea for the elevator. It also shows one of the elements being utilized for a retail enclosure. This one demonstrates the laptop retail space. These framed boxes will be throughout the store with different products in them.

I hope to have a post up on Sunday that will include the front elevation along Boylson Street and the sense of inhabiting the wall there as well as the layout of the floor plans with all of the boxed areas demonstrated.

9-3-07 Progress models

So… I am experiencing major internet issues here since we live on a college campus and with all the students moving back this weekend, internet is off and on. I am hoping this problem with the internet gets fixed quickly!

Now that they finally got mine back and running here are three models that I have been working on Thursday – Saturday. I haven’t settled on anything in particular, I keep mixing and matching some of the ideas in the models as well as sketching some new stuff. After working with the models and some sketching I have decided that the “building” wall will be made mostly of glass and I will either have the glass become less opaque or place panels in particular areas of the glass.


Here are all three models together.


I like the idea that you can inhabit the street wall elements in this model. I am going to attempt to incorporate this into one or more of the walls on my final design.


The street wall and building wall will be opposite each other. Where there is glass on the building wall it will be replicated by a solid on the street wall. It gives me a system to play with I just have to find the balance of the density between the two walls.


The wall in between the street wall and building wall will be a material similar to screening. I want you to be able to see through it slightly in all areas. The areas that I want opaque, will be filled with panels that I am thinking about using for advertising. Almost like billboards. There will also be voids cut into the screen as demonstrated.

Now...Back to work I go!

1st week back

So I have found it very difficult to get back into the swing of things after last week. I also have been spending time putting together a survey and cover letter that I am going to be using for my research paper for H&T. I finally got to do some sketching on Tuesday night and last night. I am posting three pages of sketches that sum up where I am headed after those 2 nights of sketching. I may try to turn to clay like Matt after Ted's comment of start with a box and carve away. I will see though. I at least feel confident now in the direction I need to head.



This sketch demonstrates the density levels I want to pursue both in the walls and the floor systems.



I studied the different paths one might take in turning the corner and these are all the possible paths combined into one sketch. I will decide which one to follow in the next step. Of course my main goal right now is to try to figure out how to create opposing paths without creating a "wall" for the pedestrian traveling in the opposing direction.


This page shows a combination of the issues that have come up with the sketching I have done this week. I will need to pursue how to demonstrate the density levels and a way to avoid presenting a "wall" to the pedestrian.
